IN LOVING MEMORY OF JANE VALLIS

Jane Vallis was born on October 03, 1956 in Australia as Jane Winifred Vallis. Jane`s Father was Laurence Irvin Vallis, her mother was Jean Gertrude Montrose and her sister was Jennifer Robin Vallis. Her first role was in Peter Weir`s Movie "Picnic at Hanging Rock". When 18 years old Jane arrived on the Picnic Set to play the enigmatic Marion, who dissapears forever with Miranda that fateful day on Hanging Rock, she was immediately popular. "Once we started shooting we became very good friends," says Jenny Lovell, who played Blanche. After "Picnic at Hanging Rock", Jane starred in the TV Series "The Lost Islands", "Cop Shop - Episode 55 and 56", "Holiday Island - Episode 64" and "Daily at Dawn". In 1990 she play a Tour Guide in the Short Film "Mr Edmund - More Winners". This was her last apparance.

In 1989, when Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy, her castmates took the news hard. "It was incredibly difficult," says Jenny Lovell. Jane was a Tour Guide at Sydney Opera House where she met Colin Budd and appeared in pantos there even while undergoing chemotheraphy. In the same year she married Colin Budd. She went into remission for a year but the cancer returned. When Jane realised she would not recover, she moved with Budd to her sister`s house in Erskineville, Sydney, to die among friends. "At the end," says Jenny, even though Jane was in a coma, "we all kept talking to her and having conversations with her and we could see eye movement behind her eyelids. I went over to their flat one day and this voice came from down the hall,"Is that you Jen?" It was Jane`s voice and I went running. She still had things to say and she did. It was extraordinary. She was always there for you. That is what i miss." Jane died on 27 September 1993, a week before her 38th birthday. She was 36 years old. Her ashes were scattered in Sydney Harbour.

Victoria Kitanov, a friend of Jane sayd: "It’s ironic that Jane herself has virtually vanished without trace since her death. Over the years Jane has haunted me – in her lovely, gentle way – placing small mementos in my path: a small fragrant candle in heart-shaped tin on which she had pasted a cupid, a picture of James Dean (whom she adored!), a home-made birthday card… reminding me she is still around & that all is forgiven. She was a dear friend with an extraordinary gift of making anyone feel as though they were the most important person in her life."
